Two days in Galle is the perfect amount of time. It is enough to explore the historic Fort without rushing, and enough to get a taste of the tropical coastline just outside the walls.
But to make the most of it, you need a plan. Galle has a rhythm mornings are for exploring before the heat hits, afternoons are for swimming or shopping in AC, and evenings are for sunsets and cocktails. Whether you are a culture vulture or a beach bum, this itinerary hits all the highlights in a logical loop.

Day 1 Morning: The Rampart Walk
Start your 48 hours exactly where the Dutch did: on the walls. 8:00 AM is the golden hour for walking the ramparts. The air is still cool, and the light is soft.
Start at the Main Gate, walk past the Clock Tower to the Moon Bastion (overlooking the cricket stadium), and follow the wall all the way to the Lighthouse. You’ll see locals jogging, school children in white uniforms, and fishermen checking their nets below. It’s the most peaceful time of day.
Day 1 Midday: Shopping & A Cooling Lunch
By 11:00 AM, the sun will be fierce. Retreat into the shade of the narrow streets. This is the time to hit the boutiques on Pedlar Street and Church Street.
Browse the vintage posters at Stick No Bills, smell the lemongrass at Spa Ceylon, and admire the handlooms at Barefoot. For lunch, escape the heat at a cafe like Heritage Cafe or Dumplings Cafe. Order a chilled thambili (king coconut) and a fresh salad or prawn dumplings to refuel.

Day 1 Evening: Sunset Ritual & Curry Feast
At 5:00 PM, head to Flag Rock Bastion. This is the town square of sunset watching. Grab some Isso Wade (prawn fritters) from a street cart and watch the daring cliff jumpers dive into the ocean.
Once the sun is down, it’s time for a feast. For your first night, go authentic. Head to Lucky Fort or Coconut Sambol for a traditional "Rice and Curry" spread. You’ll get 10 different clay pots filled with beetroot curry, dhal, pumpkin, and fish. It’s spicy, flavorful, and incredibly affordable.
Day 2 Morning: Beach Bliss at Dalawella
On your second day, leave the Fort. Grab a tuk-tuk and head 15 minutes south to Dalawella Beach (Wijaya Beach).
Skip the busy main beach of Unawatuna and come here instead. The goal? Swimming with sea turtles. In the morning, wild turtles swim right into the shallow lagoon to feed. You can snorkel with them in waist-deep water. Afterward, relax on the sand or swing on the famous palm tree rope swing for the ultimate vacation photo.
Day 2 Afternoon: Pizza & The Purple Haze
Stay at Dalawella for lunch. The pizza at Wijaya Beach Restaurant is legendary in the south. Eating a wood-fired pizza with your feet in the sand is a must-do.
In the late afternoon, as you head back towards Galle, stop at the Japanese Peace Pagoda on Rumassala Hill. The view from here provides a stunning panorama of the entire bay and the Fort you explored yesterday.
Day 2 Evening: Fine Dining at the Old Dutch Hospital
End your 48 hours with a touch of luxury. The Old Dutch Hospital shopping precinct is magical at night. The long colonial verandas are lit by lanterns and soft yellow lights.
Choose one of the upstairs restaurants like A Minute by Tuk Tuk or The Tuna & The Crab. Enjoy a seafood dinner with a glass of white wine, listening to the waves crash against the rocks just meters away. It’s the perfect, romantic end to your trip.
Where to Stay?
- Luxury: Amangalla or Galle Fort Hotel (History and high-class service).
- Mid-Range: Fort Bazaar or Yara Galle Fort (Chic and boutique).
Budget: Pedlar’s Inn Hostel (Clean, central, and social).
